Erasmus students and lecturers as well as CTL Eurocollege students from all departments of CTL Eurocollege recently participated in an enriching educational trip on 8th May 25 to Lefkara Village and the Old Town of Nicosia, aimed at enhancing their cultural awareness and appreciation of Cyprus’ rich heritage.
The day began in the scenic village of Lefkara, famous for its world-renowned lace embroidery (Lefkaritika) and handmade silver crafts. The tour around the village was led by Dr. Vasilis Papavasiliou, Head of the Hotel and Tourism Management Department, who introduced students to the traditional architecture, local customs, and unique stories that define Lefkara.
As part of the visit, students and lecturers were welcomed at the Lefkara Handicraft Centre, where they received a guided tour from a local expert in traditional weaving and silversmithing. The guide offered insights into centuries-old techniques passed down through generations—highlighting Lefkara’s significance in Cyprus’ cultural identity. The group also visited the Lefkara Local Museum, where they explored exhibits showcasing village life, Cypriot traditions, and rural domestic history.
In the afternoon, the group traveled to Nicosia, the island’s historic capital and the last divided capital in Europe. Students toured the Old Town within the Venetian Walls, walking through narrow streets lined with historical buildings, artisan shops, and sites of architectural and political importance. They learned about the Venetian fortifications, the city’s layered past, and its role in Cyprus’ modern story.
A special feature of the trip was a private guided tour at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, one of the capital’s most important cultural institutions. Led by a professional museum curator, students had the opportunity to view rare artefacts, historical maps, traditional clothing, furniture, and multimedia exhibits that trace the evolution of Nicosia from ancient times to the present.
To conclude the trip, participants enjoyed free time to explore the bustling city center, sample traditional Cypriot cuisine, and experience firsthand the urban atmosphere of Nicosia.
This cross-departmental trip reflects CTL Eurocollege’s commitment to offering holistic learning experiences beyond the classroom. By engaging with Cyprus’ living history and cultural assets, students gain a deeper understanding of the social, historical, and artistic elements that shape the island’s identity.
